What is environmental management system according to ISO 14001?

EMS (Environmental Management System) System of ecologically oriented company management are activities of company management focused on environmental protection defined as: part of overall management system that uses organization structures, activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources to define and implement ecological policy.
At present the awareness of responsibilities concerning our environment is growing within our business sphere, which is in line with the idea of socially responsible business activities. Top management in companies realizes the need to take the initiative in the area of environmental protection because voluntary implementation and consequent EMS certification is a necessity for the company prosperity.

If EMS is already implemented in a company, it can help to gain confidence of the interested parties by the following:

Company preparation for EMS certification monitors the following:

  • internal resources development
  • effective implementation of elements of the selected standard
  • consistent principle implementation of businesses charter for sustainable development in all company activities
Certification requires at least a three-month period when the system is implemented in everyday company activities. In this stage emphasis is put on system ability to find weak points and implement corrective actions leading to EMS continual improvement.

Scope of the project

EMS implementation project will be aimed at the areas of possible sources of environmental pollution in all the reproductive process. It will include trainings of all levels of organization personnel and will respect all the EMS system requirements in the extent of ISO 14001, according to the company needs. Purpose of the project realization is to achieve conformance in securing the company EMS with standard ISO 14001 requirements and related standards as well as with customer requirements in the world.

Main stages of the project

A. INFORMATIVE WORSHOP (for top management and work team)
  • Introduction to EMS
  • What to expect from EMS in every-day life of company
  • Impact of EMS on company economy
  • Contents, principles and structure of standard ISO 14001 requirements
  • Role of the top management for project realization
  • Development of EMS
Extent: 1 day, with small firms forms part of initial analysis
B. INITIAL ANALYSIS
  • general EMS system review within an organization
  • data report based on the analysis of EMS assurance within an organization (recommendation to take necessary actions in order to achieve conformance with relevant standard requirements)
  • specification of major non-conformities between the existing EMS and standard ISO 14001 requirements
  • preparation of EMS plan for the period till certification level is reached (based on the completed analysis)
Extent: 2-3 days (+1 day for preparation of report)
C. CONSULTATION STAGE
  • creation of documents describing functional EMS and consequent implementation into practice,
  • system of internal audits and corrective actions
  • specification of preventive actions recommendations
  • methodical help with EMS management review
This scope assumes task realization assigned by the consultant that is documented by a time sheet regarding the consultancy performance.
Scope: depending on customer requirements in the course of the given period (recommended consultation frequency is 2x - 3x a month)
D. TRAINING OF NTERNAL AUDITORS
Upon successful completion of the training, auditors will receive a personal certification.

  • requirements regarding internal auditor
  • EMS 14001 requirements
  • methodology of internal audits (preparation, course of audit and evaluation)
  • test
Extent: 1 day for training of quality system auditors, 2 days for the other applicants

Price and invoicing:
(for item C of this offer) General price is set for counselling, consultations and professional help:
  • One hour of performance: in the extent of CZK 800,-- to CZK 900,-- + 19 % VAT
  • Travel expenses: according to the valid QC regulations
  • Per diem allowance and travel time are not charged
Reimbursement method: Introductory lecture and initial analysis after work performed by the auditor. For item C of this offer invoicing after assumption of contractual obligations within 7 days, always for the past month of consultations.
  • Term of payment: 14 days.
  • If the term of payment is not observed 3 times, item C shall be invoiced in advance.
  • Agreed performance (time sheet) shall be attached to the tax document. A representative appointed by the auditor shall take care of the document administration.
Assumption of performance: Performance of contractual obligations shall be assumed by the principal in writing on auditor consulting sheet (time sheet).

Auditor’s responsibility: Auditor shall provide for the preparation of EMS and required documentation so that it conforms in all parts and in full extent to EMS certification requirements according to standards ISO 14001. Auditor appoints a representative that shall accompany the project from the beginning to the end. Auditor is responsible for the quality of all services provided.
